Delilah Beasley

 

Delilah Leontium Beasley (1872 - 1934)

Delilah Beasley, an African American woman, confronted misconceptions and contradictions as a newspaper journalist.

She was a correspondent with the Cleveland Gazette then moved to Oakland California, writing for the Oakland Tribune. During that time she also did research at Cal/Berkeley and is credited with having an impact on news print media that made them change their use of the words "darkie" and "nigger" as well as capitalizing the word Negro. Her works include: The Negro Trail-Blazers of California.
